It is now official: your rendez-vous is scheduled for next June 6, 7 & 8

The Fédération internationale de l’automobile (FIA) made public on Friday September 27, the 2014 Formula 1 world championship calendar that it had just approved. This announcement came as a confirmation of something you had probably already figured: the 45 th edition of the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2014 will take place next June 6, 7 & 8. It will be the 35 th time that Montréal and its Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will host the event. Normally, if the calendar remains as it is, it should be the 9 th round of the 2014 championship. The only year the Grand Prix du Canada was disputed on that same date was 2008 with the historic and sole win of Robert Kubica and of the BMW-Sauber team. So it’s time to make plans and book your room at the hotel in order to catch the fever, June 6, 7 & 8, 2014.

Kimi Raikkonen is returning to the Scuderia Ferrari

Was it really a surprise? Mid-September, Scuderia Ferrari announced that next year, Kimi Räikkönen will be joining Fernando Alonso and be the team’s 2 nd driver. It has been a surprise for those who had good recollections of the way the Finnish driver had left the Italian team at the end of the 2009 season. With the Prancing Horse team, he had recorded 52 starts, 9 wins, 5 pole positions and 26 podium presences in three years. To this record, one must add of course a World Champion title earned in 2007. For others, it wasn’t a surprise.

They are the ones who saw the "Iceman" coming back to F1 in good shape, successful and consistent since the beginning of the 2012 season, after two years away from the tracks. Since his return, Räikkönen was a top-10 earning points in 27 consecutive races and 30 of the 33 events he entered and until the recent Singapore Grand Prix, he had also climbed on the podium almost once each two race (14/33). With Alonso and Räikkönen at Ferrari and Rosberg and Hamilton at Mercedes, two of the front-running teams will count on an all-star line-up in 2014. Sounds good, isn’t it?

35 years ago this week, we celebrate Gilles Villeneuve's win

This week, it’s time to remember once again an event that changed history of Formula 1 on Canadian soil. On Sunday October 8, 1978, 35 years ago, it was a frigid day in the Québec metropolis. Just as cold as it was the preceding Friday and Saturday, days some remember having seen a few snowflakes flying over Island Notre-Dame and its brand new race course. It was the first ever Montréal edition of the Grand Prix du Canada and the majority of the spectators in attendance were all eyes for the red number 12 Ferrari with Gilles Villeneuve in its cockpit. On this day, the Québec born driver started from the 3rd place on the grid. He first lost a place, then claimed back the 3 rd position (lap 19), before he climbed to the 2 nd (lap 25) and first (lap 50). Villeneuve pleased the crowd as he remained in the lead until the end, earning his first career win in Formula 1. At his 19 th start, the Berthierville-born driver entered in the legend and established a Montréal tradition that last 35 years later.
