OLED 3D project comes to life in the Audi TT

PHILIPS LIGHTING - Philips, Audi, Automotive Lighting, Merck and the University of Cologne recently demonstrated a successful three-dimension (3D) OLED proof of concept following a three-and-a-half-year research project. The consortium, led by Philips, showcased 3D OLEDs – manufactured for the first time – being used in the rear lights of an Audi TT.

As part of the project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the teams also researched new materials and production processes for the manufacturing and application of 3D OLEDs. It is hoped that this break-through will provide designers with a new level of flexibility and design freedom in the future, since they will be able to incorporate light in more intricate shapes and forms than has previously been possible.
